Entrepreneurs: Why Marketing is crucial for your business

By Simbarashe Shoriwa

When most of us overhear the word ‘marketing’, what come to our mind are only advertisements mostly through these mediums: radio, television, billboards and posters.  The word itself makes us visualize and think of great sport personalities sipping a soft drink, movie stars driving high-speed and luxurious car, and singers wearing certain clothes etc. to be the face of the product or service we are offering.

Marketing techniques: adapted from Scoreoc

Marketing techniques: adapted from Scoreoc

Marketing started way back for example using the story in the bible B.C we see Eve convincing Adam to eat the forbidden apple. But she was not the marketer in this case, the snake that influenced her to market to Adam was. One of the marketing guru’s Philip Kotler on his Kotler Maketing Group site said. So we can see that the term marketing did not start today neither is it limited to businesses only.

Many business entrepreneurs take marketing for granted and think that by just placing an advertisement through specific medium they can easily reach, convince and persuade customers to buy their product or service. However the mentioned word “marketing” covers a lot including; market research, promotion, direct marketing, marketing communication, electronic marketing, consumer behavior, public relations to name but a few. All these factors will contribute towards helping your business place its product in the right consumer’s hand that you expect to come back again.

S. H. Hammons, author and humorist once said, If young men tells his girlfriend or dates that she is beautiful, is intelligent, her dress suits her well and have the best hairstyle he’s saying the right words to the right person and that is simple marketing. So in other words we are saying marketing is trying to send the correct message to the right person at the right time with the intention to satisfy them.

Now let’s look at why marketing is crucial for your business:

  • As an entrepreneur most people think that abundant ideas are the ones that run and make everything happen in the business of which that is not true. Great ideas give you a platform and advantage than your competitors and others who may want to venture into business by decreasing researching costs that you could have incurred in trying to research the kind of business one want to be in, but it should never be the reason of shunning marketing.
  • People do not just wake up and say they want to buy a product or consume a service. The entrepreneur needs to identify who their customers are and try to come up with a marketing strategy aimed at convincing them. Let’s look at one of the world’s most valuable brand ‘Apple Inc.’

Apple Inc. came up with what they call a 3-point philosophy in 1977 and has remained to be the focal of what makes the company so active at creating and profiting from their devoted customers up to today. This is Apple’s original 3 points:

  1. Empathy– We will truly cognize our customers needs than any other company
  2. Focus– In order for us to do a good job in what we do, we must exclude all of the unimportant opportunities.
  3. Impute– People DO judge a book by its cover. We can have the best product, the highest quality, most useful software, etc., and if we present it in a slipshod manner, they will be perceived as slipshod and if we present them in a creative professional manner, we will impute the desired qualities.
  • Take time to study and understand the people who are more likely to buy your product so that when you sell the product you know who you are targeting. This will help you to have an effective respond than just introduce a product without knowing who will be able to buy it.
  • Conduct your research in advance as this will give you the predictions of future of what people might have done, what they might do and not what people will do. People research can mislead and can affect your planning.

I hope you have learnt and enjoyed my article; let’s meet again next time as I will be pointing & discussing issues that affect many small businesses not to grow and succeed in Zimbabwe.

Did Sir Alex Ferguson want to be remembered as an essential man who picked his predecessor to fail?

Now United’s eighth game has been played, supporters are now losing confident in David Moyes. Can he still lead the reigning champions from the eighth position into the top four?

Having been Manchester United coach since July 2013 David Moyes is finding it very hard trying to impress his supporters while at the same time trying to adjust to the new family he joined. The 50 year old Scottish manager and former player have been managing United since the departure of Sir Alex Furgeson.

United last game was a 2-1 victory against Sunderland where Moyes favourite teenage player Adnan Januzaj braced two scores. But despite all the efforts that the players put since the beginning of 2013 Premier League, Manchester United fans still expressed concern over how Moyes has been managing the team. When I was watching Manchester United match against Southampton i could not manage but laugh because i thought of the perception United fans are likened to, the so called “plastic fans”. From Twitter to beer halls it’s clearly reflecting that Reds fans were only used to winning giving them so much passion and adoration for their team.

But the question that still remains to be answered is whether David Moyes was the right candidate for Sir Alex Ferguson?

Ciaran O’ Connor in her article clearly stated that, “Moyes still needs time to substantiate, and United fans should be patient with him because the fans were spoiled and used to have Sir Alex on the final touch line. The fans were used to the pleasure of concurrently rejoicing success after success, but now it has all changed.

Moyes came up with his own game play which some fans and analysts suggest could be the reason why the Red’s have been loosing for the past matches played so far. The likes of Van Persie has been sidelined repetitively hence the team has been failing to score. Comparing United to Everton where he came from Moyes did not have the same resources like what he is exposed to at United, and the calibre of players he now have at Manchester have totally changed.

Moyes game plan in Everton focused more on “hard to beat” defensive game type but, this seems to be a failing strategy considering United’s game play. Evra has been put on the attacking more than before and the combination that he placed of Rooney and Smalling has led many to doubt his capability.

Moyes is not only finding it hard to put the eleven impressing coordinated players who can win, but filling in the shoes of a genius and well respected man in the circles of Football fraternity seems big.

Thembisa Nkomo a seasonal local player who resides in Honeypark said, “trying to compare Moyes and Ferguson is totally wrong because Sir Alex is not just a legend but a brand himself.”

Patience one of United fans tweeted on United website saying, “I think Moyes is learning slowly the difference between managing a top team and an average team. His strategy against Southampton game was based on defending. He destabilised the midfield and defense something that big teams don’t do especially at this stage of the game.”

No one knows what he is yet to deliver to the team, but the way to find out is by giving the Scottish all the support necessary. Despite his failures the manager has to come up with a clear strategy on how he will handle the future success of Manchester otherwise it will be doomed, since Rio Ferdinand and Evra will be leaving soon and Carrick is turning 32 years.

The fans are turning their back on the man Sir Alex chose as his successor. From the look of things United fans sound bitter and angry. Link to united fan expressing his anger and frustration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_1GWlnBOkc

17:00 Good evening everyone. I am here in the Old Trafford stadium looking to a half empty stadium, but some fans are still moving in with some still outside the gates. This is a countdown towards the Barclays Premier league match between Manchester United and Southampton (kick-off time 18:00).

17:20 Teenager Adnan Januzaj has been big news after he signed a new 5 year deal at Manchester United. This was after some bigger European teams tried to get his signature, but only falling in the hands of the red devils.

17:35 I still wonder whether the young talisman Januzaj will be named in David Moyes first team today, since he impressed in the last game played against Sunderland scoring two goals. Let’s wait and find out if he will be counted amongst the eleven Man United team.

17:40 United fans expressed hope that it will be an easy walk over when the match fixtures came out. But so far the league has not been as they expect and now considering that Southampton has the second best defensive in Europe and has won four games from seven pose as a big challenge to the Red’s.

17:45 Manchester United team consists of: D. De Gea, Rafel, P. Johns, J. Evans, P, Evra, M. Fellani, M. Carrick, Nani, W. Rooney, A. Januzaj, and R. van Persie. Subs:Giggs, Smalling, Henanderz, Wellbeck, Zaha, Kagawa, Lindegaard.

17:58 The atmosphere today in the stadium is so great. Here comes the players and United will be playing from the West Stand.

18:00 (Kick-off). The game is now underway with Southampton taking the Centre ball.

18:05 Both the teams started positively well with United winger Januzaj rudely cast off to the advertising boards off the ground. Southampton seems to be looking after this young man’s moves.

18:09 Rooney just send out a marvelous pass through to Nani, who, was running from the wing, who tried to swing over across defenders and cross the ball which was cleared by a header.

18:14 Rodriguez heads towards United and managed to escape narrowly through Rafael Man United left back but the ball was high and went over the bar.

18:16 Saints fans booed Van Persie, who almost scored a magnificent goal, giving back the ball to Nani who also tries a first-time lob that became wide bouncing back in goalkeepers hands.

18:18 Sir Alex Ferguson whose book is coming out next week is also part of the fans here watching together with David Gill.

18:20 The referee has received a round of applause by the Saints fans after awarding them a free-kick for a foul committed by Patrice Evra on Adam Lallana. The Saints are persisting high up the pitch, moving well up front searching for a goal and their back is solid enough to hold the Red’s.

18:22 Manchester forward gunmen Wayne Rooney seem to be very prepared and in the mood today as he is all over the field like an excited puppy. The match is putting pressure on managers who cannot seat on their hot seats as they are both patrolling on the touchline giving one or two instructions, making the game tenser.

18:25 Wayne Rooney give Van Persie a blind curly pass and he pass through Boruc, but was signaled offside. The ball went straight in the legs of Rooney who lose it to Lallana who feeds it to Dani Osvaldo just tried his luck shot only to be pounced off by De Gea.

18:26 Manchester United Scored 1-0 Southampton. United gunmen Van Persie scored the leading goal for the Red’s after Rooney missed the first chance when he tried to chip the ball ahead Boruc, only for Van Persie to round the goalie and score. This is wonderful.

19:29 Rooney almost doubled the score after he miss the ball which went through crossbar, but Nani’s shot went wide as he tried to maintain the momentum that have gathered.

19:32 Manchester United has so far played the game like the champions and the fans start to sing for the champions. Rafael receives a curly through pass from Januzaj but the young defender missed it.

19:34 With 13 minutes to half time Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin ignites the team spirit again as he pass Januzaj through a leg over.

19:39 Mike Jones the referee give a break after Jones and Osvaldo collide in the air and Osvaldo land with wrong side. The players are taking advantage of Osvlado’s injury by rushing towards touchline taking turns to drink water.

19:41 United teenager Januzaj has been playing well the first half. The player has gained confidence after scoring two goals against Sunderland and signing a new 5 year contract giving him more years to prove his skills and talent.

19:46 As the match was about to be get on half time Van Persie made a terrible and dangerous mistake as he takes down Victor Wenyama close to the eighteen area box. The Saints are awarded a free-kick but to no avail it hits the wall and the referee blows the whistle to end the first half.

20:26 Welcome back to the second half of the game with Manchester United leading 1-0 against Southampton. It seems the United are well prepared for the game and good to go.

20:30 United defense is so solid and combative that the Saints are failing to get it through it despite their great attacking attempts. Fellani just get a warning yellow card from referee Jones after his bad nasty attempt tackle.

20:36 The young Januzaj dribbled the ball after chasing it from Nathaniel Clyne, but I personally think he won the ball fairly. From the look of things the game has just changed as Nani has been brought down in a fair challenge while running towards the goal post by Luke Shaw.

20:40 Wenyama received a yellow card after he trick Januzaj. United is given a free-kick just after that foul and Rooney scored the second goal after receiving the pass from van Persie, but the Man United gunmen is offside. Bad luck but this was an impressive effort from United gunmen.

20:47 Nani has just been substituted for Giggs. This can be Moyes tactics towards the Saints.

20:50 Manchester midfield just changed with Danny Welbeck’s entry who took the left wing, Giggs in the Middle and Januzaj now the far right wing.

20:51 The stadium has 75220 attendance today.

20:54 Southamton has decide to make a change by putting in Guly Do Prado in place of Wanyama who has been exceptionally playing well in the game. United centre-back is warming on the touchline.

20:57 This is Saints greatest chance but Clyne who was on right position failed to impress his hopeless fans after his long range shot was deflected away by De Gea.

20:59 What a marvelous an superb goal there from Dejan Lovren. Now it’s Manchester United 1-1Southampton. The 24 year old centre back has just distracted an in swaying corner kick preceding De Gea.

Manchester United was left on eighth position with eleven points on Saturday after they equalised 1-1 against Southampton at Old Trafford. This was after Robin van Persie Manchester United gunmen scored an open play goal in 26 minutes of the first half which was later followed by Adam Lallana’s tapping goal in the last minute of the game which give a draw.

Mauricio Pochettino’s players seem very enthusiastic and robust from the first half since they are four points ahead of the renowned four league championship holder the United.

Southampton has been playing good football since the beginning of the Premier League having scored seven goals so far and considering two scores. This put it four points ahead of United and on sixth better place although it fall from fifth place from the last time.

The Portuguese winger Luis Nani came with a good cross only to find Van Persie on the wrong side and the ball was lobbied by defenders.

Southampton were really going hard for Manchester United with teenager Jay Rodriguez coming up with an off target header. The Saints could have taken the lead from the first time after Rodriguez Southampton’s forward talisman sent a threatening attempt twice but to no avail. Dani Osvaldo could have changed the whole game when the ball fell in front of him on the edge of penalty box after Victor Wanyama Southampton’s centre back took the ball from Wayne Rooney deep inside the United’s half.

Prince Parwaringira said, “Moyes has turned United into the Everton junior team. The midfielders cannot even control the ball no matter how good the strikers are.”

Wayne Rooney gave a blind back pass and the ball get in the legs of Rodriguez who however failed to find his way through leading the ball to fall in the hands of David De Gea.

Manchester United took lead after Robin van Persie scored a fantastic open play goal in 25 minutes giving United their first home advantage goal against the Saints in the Premier League.

In the second half Manchester came with a bang, but Van Persie missed and only flicked the ball leading to another corner kick which cannoned off the bar.

Lallana came with a drifting move in the eighteen’s area but was found offside. Janujaz followed with a long range testing Boruc but the Polish goal kipper stood strong averting the ball outside.

As the game was about to finish Manchester United fans conveyed hope of fully collecting all the three points only to be disappointment in the last minute. Dejan Lorren caused confusion in the United penalty area as he passed the ball to Lallana who drove it into an empty net.

Manchester United fanatics were so disappointed, and the question that still remains is whether Moyes will be able to recover the lost points. For the Southampton fans it was a worthy rewarding travel to Old Trafford. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_1GWlnBOkc

Arsenal is currently on top of the league leading with 19 points and Sunderland on bottom with only one point after all the teams having played eight games. The next Premier League match will be between Swansea versus Stoke City.

Manchester United coach David Moyes disappointed after his team equalised 1-1 with Southampton

Manchester United coach David Moyes disappointed after his team equalised 1-1 with Southampton: Source Mirror.com

David Moyes is facing the most challenging moment in his career ever since he started coaching in 1998. The Scottish manager joined Manchester United in July 2013 after Sir Alex Ferguson retired. For Moyes its not all rosy at United as the world is spinning the other way round.

Leading Southampton by 1-0 Moyes was over the moon feeling that things were getting better for the Scottish father of two, but instead they turn for the worse after a massive last week outclassing of Sunderland at their home. The new contracted teenager Aduana Januzaj gave hope to cling on to the sleepless coach. The so called United ‘plastic fans’ could not hide their increased excitement at Old Trafford when Van Persie positioned the Reds ahead of their rivals in the first half.

But as the game became tense and more perplexing Manchester United tried their best to score only regretting the chances they wasted. Van Persie and Wayne Rooney missed twice hitting the woodwork, faced with the indomitable Saints who came high flying managing to get an equalizer in the last 89 minute of the game.

As the match ends Moyes find it tough to continue wandering around but former manager Sir Alex Ferguson scrolled in empathy in the box.

‘We lost not because we were not good but we loosed focus at the end and it’s disappointing to lose the lead at the end,’ said Moyes in a television interview with MUTV.

‘We had opportunities but unfortunately we did not use them and we also need to improve in our defending. We can do better, both defending and scoring’ he said.

Moyes is finding it hard to fill in the shoes of legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

For United fans this game made a difference, it seems as the chanting fanatics are seeing light at the end of the tunnel considering the way United played against Sunderland.

Manchester United has improved its performance but, they did not move from their eighth position in the Premier League. Moyes move to sign Marouone Fellaini this summer is something I still doubt because the player cannot outclass Nani or any of the current players t United,’ said Tatenda Rambwi Monash University men soccer right back defender.

For Southampton it was a worthy rewarding journey all the way from Hampshire to Old Trafford as they still clinch on top of United with four points ahead.

Januzaj and Nathaniel Clyne captured the audience attention with their match battles which some likened to that of Cristano Ronaldo of Real Madrid and midfielder Ashley Cole of Chelsea.

Both teams went home with credits, despite some warnings that 18 year old Januzaj and Victor Wanyama ended up having for foul play. Todays match proved more different and exciting as all United’s gunmen Van Persie and Rooney were attacking from all angle living Artur Boruc sweating. United’s Rubber stoppers Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra made the United defense seem solid and unmoved.

Red’s took lead in 26 minute when the young United Januzaj dribbled the ball and curved a smooth exquisite pass to Rooney who missed, after Boruc blocked his shot. Van Persie took the advantage and redirected the ball in the nets instantly giving United a leading 1-0.

In the second half United came with a bang in the first few minutes but started loosing concentration after Moyes started substituting. United missed chances, but Dejav Looren tried to score after heading a corner from Adam Lallan but the ball fall in the hands of David De Gea who diverted it off the sight.

We could have done better if we were persistent, but we took long to react to United’s goal. Overall we played well and the game was good,’ Mauricio Pochettino Southampton manager was quoted in BBC Sport news.

Southampton Rickie Lambert was put in the last 25 minutes but Manchester could have scored another goal when Van Persie missed a header hitting the bar and Burco making magnificent saves.

18 year old Januzaj was flagged with a yellow card after his bad tuckle towards Clyne, and while challenging the ball Nani was pushed down by Wenyama who gets a yellow card. The players are now getting tense.

After the press conference Moyes disappeared but, Sir Alex stated on MUTV that Nemanja Vidic United’s central defender should be in the Reds team. Vidic who is expected back in the next Champions League match had calf complain.

United are already four points behind Southampton with Arsenal and Chelsea leading the Champions League respectively.

South Africa Consumer Spending Growing Slowly

Consumer Spending growing slowly: sourced from sabc.co.za

South Africa consumer spending has been growing slowly for the past 4 months. This has been attributed to a steady increase in real household disposable income an increase in inflation from 5.5% in January to 6.3% in September.  Factors such as social payments and high interest rate which stood at 5% were mentioned to be major contributor to the reduction of household spending.

As many consumers are relying on borrowing to survive and to pay for their chosen lifestyles many are still worried about the future of South Africa’s economy.

Rand Merchant Bank chief economist Ettiene le Roux was quoted in a local engineering newspaper saying, “High unemployment rate and an oversupply of unsecured lending are causing consumers to spend less on durable goods.”

An Economist John Loos was quoted in ENCA newspaper as saying, “households’ debt-to-disposable income ratio stands at 76% and the health of the broader economy is not helping.”

During the 2010 and 2011 era there was high consumer spending due to a stronger rise in real household disposable income. Disposable income rose from 4.8% to 5.25 respectively due to an increase in salary of 8%.

This year’s growth was additionally slowed by unsecured credit like personal loans which rose by 2.1%. This is the slowest growth rate for the past years since 2009.

“I think as students we are now spending less this year than we used to do about 3 years ago, this has to some extend changed our shopping habits and the type of the products we buy,” said Prince Parwaringira a 3rd year student at Monash University South Africa.

When Football Becomes the Catalyst of Driving Homosexuality Russia and Qata

Since Russia’s controversial anti-gay legislative was passed into law in June this year, there has been sparked debate on its ability to host the Soccer World Cup 2018. The country has received so much attention and criticism from various Human Rights Activist Groups across the continents for passing such law.

With only 5 years left for the country to host such a prestigious and glamorous event many people are still adamant and not confident with Russia’s anti homosexual law.

Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin clearly stated that, “the law is not meant to discriminate or exclude those who are homosexuals, but rather it is meant to ban ‘homosexual propaganda’ especially among the young people.”

Qata a country of about 2.501 million people according to the World Bank statistics does not tolerate homosexuality. The country was selected as the 2022 Soccer World Cup host.

The two countries have been receiving so much criticism especially from the Western countries to change their law and views about gays.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter was quoted in BBC Sport Football saying, “Qata’s stance on issue of homosexuality is additional centered on their ethical and what they deem proper.”

Football is now being used as a catalyst for driving homosexuality in many countries and those that defies it may be punished by having the event withdrawn. Hosting such big enormous event like World Cup has been attached with conditions that are not only defying other societal norms and values but also eroding the people’s culture.

The anti-gay law has been misinterpreted because the bill is meant to protect the children so that when they grow up they can define themselves rather than the media trying to propagate homosexuality, said Vitaly Mutko, Russia’s Sports Minister. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccRZgQCz4Rc.Source:Euronews

Russia and Qata should be treated like any other country and be allowed to host the 2018 and 2022 Soccer World Cup respectively.

The Western media has painted a bad picture about Russia’s stance towards gays. The question that still remains is whether Russia and Qata will change their laws against homosexuality or loose hosting the World’s biggest event. What is your take ?

FIFA President Sepp Blatter was quoted in BBC Sport Football saying, “Qata’s stance on issue of homosexuality is additional centered on their ethical and what they deem proper.”
Football is now being used as a catalyst for driving homosexuality in countries and that defies it. Hosting such big enormous event like World Cup has been attached with conditions that are not only defying other societal norms and values but also eroding the people’s culture.
The anti-gay law has been misinterpreted because the bill is meant to protect the children so that when they grow up they can define themselves rather than the media trying to propagate homosexuality, said Mutko, Russia’s Sports Minister.
Russia and Qata should be treated like any other country and be allowed to host the 2018 and 2022 Soccer World Cup respectively.
The Western media has painted a bad picture about Russia’s stance towards gays.
